Self-Mentoring Strategies from Your Invisible Mentors

“I hate this quote from Nike, but sometimes you just have to do it. We look at other people and think they had it easy or they did it the easy way. I have had several young women say to me, “You always had great jobs and everything you did was fun,” and I’d say, “You know that’s not true. I had some crappy jobs and no it wasn’t always fun.” But something my father always said to me was, “Keep your sense of humour, you’re going to need it,” and I did. I think it’s important to keep your sense of humour and have a good outlook on life and sometimes don’t take things so seriously. Yes business is serious, but step back, be objective and don’t try to second guess yourself too much, just do it.” Andrina Lever

“Seth Godin says, “Never trust anyone who gives you a list of tips.” But I think if I had one piece of advice, it would be this, go back and think of the regrets in your life and reassess if they are still regrets.  We spend a lot of time thinking less of ourselves because of the mistakes that we make. We keep remembering mistakes the same way we thought of them right after we made them. So go back and think of the regrets you have in your life now. When someone asked me “what’s the biggest regret you have?” I started to list all the regrets I had based on how I felt when I had them and I realized at the moment that I wasn’t sad that that happened.” Drew Dudley

“Be grateful for the skills and talents you’ve been blessed with and honour those gifts by striving every day to make the most of them, that would be my advice.” Helga Iliadis

“Look within! Tie an anchor around your courage, faith, integrity and humanity and never let go…use them to find your true power; power to validate from inside out rather than to seek the validation of others.  Power to make a difference in whatever way you choose.” Irene Becker

“Network and get involved! I’d say that to everybody. It’s one of the reasons I go out and talk to student groups to explain to them that networking isn’t just for senior people. It’s something they need to from the start of their career. You need a network of people around you so in good and bad times you have people to call on. For me, it’s the most powerful thing I’ve done and I can’t recommend it enough. It takes time though and you’ve got to find the networks and the groups and the activities that work for you, whether it’s geographical or it’s within an industry, or a women’s network. Get out there and you’ll get to meet people you wouldn’t come across in your day-to-day work and that’s just so important.” Maggie Berry

“Always try to find the good in people. It’s not always easy, but try to find the good qualities in people and work with those.” Mark Prasuhn

“Never stop learning. That has been one of my biggest strengths. I’m continually learning from everything. I make lots of mistakes, and I recently had this conversation with my seven year old that unless you try you’ll never learn. It’s okay to make mistakes because that means you’re trying and you’re learning something. Read books, read articles, take courses and look for opportunities to learn new things.” Miranda Vande Kuyt
